PERFORMANCE

Camera pans up

into the car, revealing what Mia looks like

this is effective because the audience can now put a face to the name and voice

She then creates a square with her hands and one appears on the screen

this is a nice touch because it makes the audience take in the sentence more which is 'don't be a square'

Vincent looks down at the race track for the cars and the camera pans down to look at what he's looking at, when he turns away the camera does the same

Steady cam is used, follows Vicent through the whole of the restaurant

every time he looks at somethign the camera follows his view

this is effective because it puts the audience in the same place as Vincent

Also highlights how enclosed the restaurant is which is a key aspect of Tarantino's work

Song playing as soon as they get through the door

At first it's non diegetic but the audience pressumes its being played in the restaurant over some speakers

however the camera goes back to follow Vicnt and reveals theres a man on stage singing and playing the guitar

Song is by 'Ricky Nelson'

Vincent states 'it's like a wax museum with a pulse' and that's due to there bring lookalike of some of America's most famous celebrities

Cuts to the stage giving the audience a better look at Ricky Nelson

Buddy Holly comes and takes their orders

he is dressed in a white suit with a black bow tie which was a signature look for Holly

Medium shot

as their order is being taken, the camera flips to teh other side fo them

this is effective because it makes the audience feel like they are in the car with them

Cut on action

Vincent grabbing the menu

He calls Mia 'Peggy Sue' linking to one of Buddy Holly's biggest hit songs

Mia smokes 'Red Apple' cigarettes fictional brand Tarantino came up with, they are a signature within his films

In kill bill there's a tracking shot of the bride, an advert for the cigarettes is visible behind her

Also Pumpkin had a box of them at the start of the film

Vincent wears a bolo neck tie, which is typical for a western amn

fits in for when mia calls him a cowboy

Passing the cigarette to Mia

Background is out of focus, makes us focus on Mia and Vincent, shallow depth

Band of Outsiders (1964)

John Travolta and Uma Thurman were shown the dance scene from it to give them an idea of how they should dance

Mia Wallace's look was influenced by Anna Karina's look in the film

Uma was also told to dance like the Duchess from The AristioCats

Foxforce (1976)

Fox Force Five mis starred in is a reference to 'Foxforce'

Both plots revolve around an ethnically diverse squad of females with unique skills

The Warriors (1979)

Identical close up shot of lips speaking into a microphone

Urban Cowboy (1980) John Travolta also previously starred in Urban Cowboy

God of Gamblers (1989)

Every time vincent goes to the bathroom something bad is shown to happen

Plot aspect is taken from God of Gamblers

Key narrative device

The suit Mia wears the exact same one that Jackie Brown buys in the film Jackie Brown

Butch is another character who smokes the cigarettes

This shot is also used in Kill Bill Vol 1

Trademark bare feet

Mia always has bare feet in the apartmenet

dolley following mia's feet as she walks into the room to Vincent

Mia 'I don't have Cooties' Grease reference

Cuts to a Marilyn Monroe look alike doing the thing with the wind, iconic

Long shot of them dancing

Steady came following Mia around and joining Vincent again

Dancing song

Chuck Berry 'You Can Never Tell'
