Problem/Research Plan - Aral Sea Crisis - Personal Project
What do I know
The Aral Sea Crisis
The Aral Sea Crisis was caused because the Soviets dammed the two main rivers leading into the Aral Sea to boost cotton production. This lowered the water inflow to the Aral Sea, leaving only 1/5 of what it originally was. This meant that water was being evaporated faster than it was being replenished, and the Aral Sea began to shrink. The cotton industry boomed but the fishing industry was wrecked, as concentration of salt increased, making it inhabitable. The Aral Sea shrunk to 10% of its original size.
Basic knowledge about the Aral Sea
The Aral Sea is near the Caspian Sea
Two main rivers lead into the Aral Sea: Amu Darya and Syr Darya
The two rivers are freshwater, while the Aral Sea is saline because of the desert.
The Aral Sea has an equilibrium of water from the water flowing in and evaporation.
