Unit 8 The Earth
8.4 Sedimentary rocks - solid rock formed when increasing layers of rocks and mud collect on sea bed and compress particles in deeper layers == when little grains of sediment stick together
-
-
-
weight of new sediment presses on old sediment to press water out and chemical changes forms sedimentary rocks
-
-
example - limestone - almost white - formed from tiny fragments of shells from animals, such as corals with grains of calcium carbonate
-
8.1 Rocks, Minerals and soils
-
-
-
SOILS
-
also contains remains of plants, animals and waste products like dung ==> all material from living things called HUMUS
bacteria, fungi and small animals live in soil
-
-
-
-
8.3 Igneous rocks - made form magma that has cooled and solidified - also affected by way it is cooled
-
-
-
igneous rocks
-
diff igneous rocks form from different samples of magma ==> because different samples of magma = diff mixture of diff materials in diff quantities
-
8.2 Soil
consists of rocks , minerals, humus, bacteria fungi and small animals (Humus = remains of dead plants = organic matter)
-
-
-
8.6 Weathering
wearing away of rocks by rain, wind, frost and changes in temperature, rivers and plants
physical weathering
water gets into the cracks and empty spaces in rocks, ==> when water freezers, it expands and causes the cracks to get larger, then when it melts ( temperature rises) , the larger cracks are left. the repeated cycle of freezing and expanding causes rocks to break up.
heat of Sun expanding rocks, and cool nigh temperatures making the rocks contract. the repeating cycle also causes rocks to crack
strong winds and running water also wear away rocks, and the rocks become smooth from the water running over them or the rocks may be marked by the direction of the wind
