The Silmarillion: Places and People
Jessi: 1-15
Iluvatar:
- AKA Eru. He is the single creator and maker of Arda (the world). In the beginning, Eru created the Ainur, the angelic beings that would later gain control over the elf and human lands. Uru created elves and mankind all on his own without the help of the Ainur. Almost like the Judeo-Christain God
Ainulindalë
- this is the music of the Ainur. The first thing that Ilvutar created was the Ainur and made them sing and create music in harmony. Eru created the first theme of bringing music the heaven, and the group realized that as more understanding and knowledge was gained, their music became more harmonious.
Ainu/Ainur
- The Ainur (in the singular form Ainu) are the first and most powerful beings in the world. The Ainur were spirits that existed with Eru before time. Through their music, the world was created. Many of the Ainur descended into Arda (the world) and guided it. 15 of those who descended became the most powerful, called the Valar. The fifteenth was Melkor. He became the first dark power because he turned down the ideas of Eru.

Instead, they call him "Morgoth, the Dark Enemy of the World". When the Ainur's music was created, he decided to go off the beat and play what he wanted. Similar to the idea of Satan (two names, fallen angel).
Ulmo
- the sea kind and the lord of waters. He is lonely and constantly changing his location. Ulmo is a lover of water and one of the chief architects. He is responsible for controlling the ocean. Everyone fears the sea (including Melkor) because it is so unpredictable. He prefers to dwell in the deeps of rivers and the sea.

Arda
- also known as earth, is where all of the peoples of Middle-Earth and the Valinor lived. It was created through the music of the Ainur and was set aside for the elves and human beings to live on. When Eä was created, many of the Ainur decided to live there. The flat Arda was surrounded by oceans and lit up by lamps. The growth of creatures and plants created the first spring. Melkor ended this time by launching a surprise attack, destroying the lamps and the world layout.
Aulë
- the ruler of what the earth is made of and what is below it. He is also the lord of Smiths. His greatest works are the creation of the shells of the moon and the sun. Called the Two Lamps of the Valar.
Ea
- the term used for the whole star system containing the planet, Arda which contains the continent, Middle-Earth. This idea was first conceived by Eru who spoke it into actuality. AKA the universe. Similar to the early Christain views where the Earth is the center of the solar system.
Children of Illúvatar
- Elves and men. Eru created these all on his own, following the creation of the earth. Elves came first, and then mankind came following the creation of the sun and the moon.
