MAKE MAGNETS
-
Man Made
1. Stroke Method
how?
- Stroke iron rod with one pole of magnet
- Repeat the stroking process a few times using the same pole and in the same direction
- Bring iron rod near steel clips to test magnetism
- the position where the stroking magnet leaves the iron rod will have an opposite pole to the stroking magnet
make stronger?
- the more the number of strokes,
the stronger the magnet
2. Electrical Method
how?
- Coil the electrical wire as many times as
possible around the nail
- Connect the ends of the wires to the ends of
batteries
- Once circuit is switched on, iron nail will be magnetised.
- This kind of magnet is called an electromagnet
- It is a temporary magnet. once the circuit is switched off
the iron nail loses its magnetism
make stronger?
- the more the number of turns of wires,
the stronger the magnet
- the more the number of batteries,
the stronger the magnet

Levitating Rings - Repulsion, same poles
Adjacent Rings - Attraction, unlike poles
NOTE:
- Larger magnets are not always stronger than smaller magnets.
- We cannot compare the strength of 2 magnets just by looking at their size or shape
- We need to test the magnet to find out which one is stronger
