What I know now about the ava ceremony
4/6/19
Lauga tali-This is done by the guest on behalf of the church/village/school to thank the guests for having them.
Tufa ava
Lauga usu
Folafola ava
Sufi ava
Taulealea
Tautu ava
Fale upolu
Alii
Faatau
Suiava
Taupou-The taupou sits there and does a process called palu le ava which means to mix or to make the ava
Taulealea-The taulealea is a group made of 3 to 4 men that sit in line with the taupou and help the taupou as she is making the ava/ Palu le ava
Tufa ava-The tufa ava is a orator chief that calls out one by one the names of all the chiefs that should be given the ava to and the order that they should be given
Faatau-A faatau is a battle between orators to determine who will speak on behalf of the guest
Suiava-This person is seated on the right side of the taupou and pours in the water for the ava
Fale upolu-These are the really old chiefs
Fau-A fau is what the taupou
uses to mix the ava
Tafau-A tafau is the person that stands behind the right shoulder of the taupou and when the taupou is ready she will throw the fau over her right shoulder and the tafau will be ready to catch it and then he shakes out the root fiber in the fau and then gives it back to the taupou
Tanoa-This is what the taupou or the ava maker use to hold the ava in while mixing it
Ipu tau ava-This cup is used to help distribute the ava this is no ordinary cup this cup is made from one half of a ripe coconut shell
Fau-The fau is material from the dried fibre of the fau tree (Hibiscus tiliaceus). The bak is then stripped of the plant and the outer layer is removed then the inner part if the bark is the shredded in to string and then people use it to make the ava
The ava plant is called piper methysticum
What I found interesting was the ava ceremony is practised in all parts of the pacific island such as tonga and fiji etc
Tautu ava-Once the tufa ava says what chief the ava should be given to the tautu ava will go and give the ava to that chief
Alii-Paramount chiefs Majority of the time these chiefs do not speak
The importance of the Ava ceremony is to allow the hosts to acknowledge the visitors. And for the visitors to advise who they are where they have come from and who they have brought with them (The titles of the chiefs they have brought with them).
The Purpose of the Ava Ceremony: It is to welcome guests into your village or your surroundings before an important gathering. It allows the hosts to find out who is visiting and what sort of titles do the visitors hold. So the guest can acknowledge them accordingly.
