Joined the navy at 12 years old, common at the time

Son of a clergyman

He was training to be an officer, started as a midshipmen

He was not always popular with his superiors as he was rather outspoken

Lost the sight in one eye

Loss of right arm

As his career developed, he sustained various serious wounds.
