Norse Mythology 8—9---Bingyu He (Rose)
8: Freya's unusual wedding
Thor
God of thunder
Mightiest of all the Aesir
The strongest, the bravest, the most valiant in battle
hammer
Hammer
He always kept his hammer within reach while he slept
Called Mjollnir
It had been made for Thor by the dwarfs Brokk and Eitri
It was one of the treasures of the gods
If Thor hit anything with it, that thing would be destroyed
If Thor threw the hammer at something, the hammer would never miss its target, and would always fly back through the air and return to his hand
Thor could shrink the hammer down and hide it inside his shire, and he could make it grow again
It was a perfect hammer in all things expect one: it was slightly too short in the handle
The hammer kept the gods of Asgard safe from all the dangers that menaced them and the world
Frost giants and ogres, trolls and monsters of every kind, all were frightened of Thor's hammer
Freya's wedding
The ogre has Thor's hammer
Eight days from now
The ogre does not want any treasures, he wants to marry Freya
9: The mead of poets
A long story
it does no credit to anyone: there is murder in it, and trickery, lies and foolishness, seduction and pursuit
It began not long after the dawn of time
In a war between the gods: the Aesir fought the Vanir
The Aesir were warlike gods of battle and conquest
Vanir
the Vanir were softer, brothers and sister gods and goddesses who made the soils fertile and the plants grow, but none the less powerful of that
Frey and Freya
brother and sister
they were leaders of the Vanir who would stay with the Aesir in Asgard from now on, under the terms of the truce
Suttuing
A wealthy giant
He does not believe that dwarfs possess anything that could compensate he for his parent's deaths
He has many servants in his mountain fastness, and all the riches he could dream of
He has gold, and precious stones, and iron enough to make a thousand swords
He is the master of mighty magics
He took the mead the dwarfs had made from Kvasir's blood and he took other things from them as well
The people who heard the story called the mead of poetry "the ship of the dwarfs"
Since it had floated Fjalar and Galar off the rocks and taken them safety home; they called it Suttung's mead; they called it the liquid of Odrerir or Bodn or Son
Odin
He listened to his ravens' words. He called for his cloak and is hat
He sent for the gods and told them to prepare three enormous wooden vats, the largest vats that they could build, and to have them waiting by the gates of Asgard
He told the gods he would be leaving them to walk the world, and might be some time
he needs a whetstone, to sharpen a blade with. The finest we have here
He wishes to has the auger, the drill, called Rati
Norse Mythology 10—11---Bingyu He (Rose)
10: Thor's journey to the land of the giants
Thialfi's family
Thialfi and his sister, Roskva, lived with their father, Egil, and their mother on a farm at the edfe of wilf country
Beyond their farm were monsters and giants and wolves
Thialf could run faster than anyone or anything
Living at the edge of the wild country meant that Thialfi and Roskva were used to miracles and strange things happening in their world
Many times Thialf walked into trouble and had to outrun it
The world beyond the farm was wilderness
Thor and Loki and Thialfi traveled east, toward Jotunheim, home of the giants, and the sea
It became colder the farther east they went
Freezing winds blew, draining them of any warmth
Black-haired giant
They called Black-haired giant Skrymir
It means 'big fellow'
Giant land
The gate was higher than most cathedrals. It had metal bars covering it, of a size that would have kept any unwanted giants at a respectable distance
There were benches as high as treetops, which giants sitting on them
King of the giants
The king had a narrow, intelligent face
The king had flame-red hair
The king's eyes were an icy blue
11: The apples of immortality
Thor and Loki and Hoenir
This was another time that there were three of them, exploring in the mountain wastes on the edge of Jotunheim, the home of giants
Idunn was married to Bragi, god of poetry, and she was sweet and gentle and kind
She carried a box with her, amde of ash wood, which xontained golden apples
When the gods felt age beginning to touch them. Idunn would open her box and allow the god or goddess to eat a single apple. As they ate it, their youth and power would return to them. Without her apples the gods would scarcely be gods
Thiazi in eagle form could not stop himself, could not change direction
He flew into the flames
The giant's fathers caught fire, the tips of his wings burned, and, a featherless eagle, he fell from the air and crashed into the ground with a bang and a thud that shook the fortress of the gods
A blow of Thor's hammer parted Thiazi from his life
