Inception: Opening
MIS-EN-SCENE
Soldiers
Have guns and are dressed in uniform, showing that danger is going to be a at high stakes in the film
Saito's room
lit up by lanterns above his head, there are loads of them, this could link to the idea that he's in limbo but wants to get back to te real world
-
Saito's house
Cgi was definetly used for this buildings becasue it doesn't seem to quit fit in with it's surroundings
-
It all implies that Saito is a wealthy man and that he has a high role, although this is a question the spectator would be asking
Cobb's spinning top
This is shown in a close up, implying that it is going to be very important to the story line which it is
-
Reflective table
Making Cobb face limbo since the last time he was there he was with Mal, it's making him face his actions
The walls are very dark and dimly lit, this increases the idea that the man ahs been there for a very long time
CINEMATOGRAPHY
close up
of waves crashing and it's in slow emotion, building up the scene making the audience anticipate what's going to happen next
-
Medium shot
kid playing in the sand
-
This goes in and out of focus, linking to the fact that it's set in limbo, but the audience doesn't know this yet
Long shot of the kids playing with a sand castle, slow motion
Long shot
looking through the doorway behind Saito, he's hunched over
-
-
Saito is speaking about a man he knew who owned the spinning top and it cuts between him and the spinning top, each time getting closer to his face
it then cuts to Cobb who looks up directly at Saito, although due to the camera angle it could be perceived by some people that he's looking directly at them
EDITING
-
Circular Narrative, ends where it began
-
-
REPRESENTATION
-
Saito is represented as a rich and powerful man, with the guards, soldiers and giant home
-
-
SOUND
diegetic
Sounds of waves crashing, that's going with the close up of the waves
-
PERFORMANCE
The fact that when saito sees the spinning top he stops going for his drink implies that he knows who's come to find him and therefore this creates more suspense
