REPRESENTATION

EDITING

Fade

Fades into the scene of Vienna lighting a chanderlier

Vienna

She is wearing a white dress

Represents her purity and possibly her showing that she is surrendering

White is a colour used to surrender, although the black within the dress could link to that spark within her that's still ready to fight to the death

Long shot

of her walking around the chandelier and putting it up

Cut on Action

Vienna turning around because of someone walking in

Pov shot

Vienna looking at Old Tom walking in

Tilted down looking at her from above, shows that her power is dwinderling

Turkey

Covered in blood

Representing someone's career whos been blacklisted

Vienna going to the floor to help Turkey turns into a medium shot

Camera pans

Medium shot follows Tom picking up the gun and walking towards the bar

Tom picks up Turkey's gun, this is important because he uses a gun later on

Medium shot

Vienna's holding Turkey like he's a baby in her arms

Shows that he saw her as a mother figure and looked up to her

Hand held Camera

Used to follow Emma into the saloon, it passes emma and carries onto look closer at Vienna playing the Piano

Makes the audience feel like they are looking from emma's point of view

It's a scene you wouldn't expect from Vienna's character

Vienna playing the piano, its calming even though the audience knows she has a secret, makes the scene more tense

Feminine outfit

Vienna

She hits the Piano hard out of frustration

Shows that she's had enough of the fighting, which the dress represents as well #

tilted up towards the mob

Intimidating

Feels claustrophobic due to the proximity of the different members

Vienna rants at the Mob

She looks directly at the Camera

She's also telling the audience that it needs to stop, although she's actually talking about McCarthyism

Also used for when she realises her fate

Ensures the audience understands that her fate is real and that she can not be saved

Allows them to also see her reaction which is full of sadness

Two shot

Tom stating that its the 'first time i ever felt important'

This contrasts the fact that women are usually used to fill gaps within the film, although this time it was Tom's character that did it

When Vienna's fighting back hand held camera is used

Shows her raw emotions and that her sparks back she isn't going to give up easily

Turkey

They do not show Turkey dieing

This goes in line with them not showing JG +V having sex

The audience at the time would not expect to see things like this

Vienna

The men couldn't hang her because she's a woman and they believe it's wrong, although they could hang Turkey because he's a man

Possible realisation that they are doing the wrong thing, this may have happened to many people within McCarthyism but if you left you would be targeted as well

Echo under the bridge

It amplifies the sense of Emma being psychotic

This contrasts the fact that Mciver's hesitates but Emma doesn't highlighting that the power has gotten to her head

Johnny rolls over the bridge and saves Vienna

Show that she still needs help even though she won't admit it

It's better if communists stick together instead of stabbing each other in the back, it makes them stronger to stick together

Of the mob walking into Vienna's

They all walk in and gather behind Emma

This gives her more power because they outnumber Vienna

However, the Camera is tilted down looking at them, therefore Vienna still has some power over them

Diegetic sound

Vienna is playing the song 'Johnny Guitar' on the Piano

The songs a leitmotif

Men are running around her in all directions looking for her friends, but she's calm and collected trying to prove her innocence

Close up

Turkey's foot coming out from under the table

A bang is used to signify that something has moved and it makes the audience anticipate for it to be something to do with turkey

J cut

This is used to amplify the fact that Turkey has been discovered

It also allows the audience to see Vienna's reaction to Turkey making the noise

Pnas following the mob to pick up the table and pull Turkey out from underneath it

Breaking the fourth wall

Vienna looks directly at the camera while Emma's trying to persuade Turkey to say it was all Vienna's idea

Turkey is in the foreground with his head down, while the mob is surrounding him, puts the audience in his place

Cut's to Turkey looking up at the mob, with the camera tilted down onto him, making him look small

Tom gets his gun taken away but then tries to use Turkey's

Cross cutting

This is to show Tom taking Turkey's gun out from his belt in the kitchen #

During the fight scene with Vienna, the duration of the shots are long, gives the audience time to process what is going on plus it's dialogue heaving

Medium shot of emma staring at the fire with her shadow behind her, symbolic of the devil

Vienna's burning down, all her dreams being crushed like so many due to McCarthyism

Orchestra music is used for when there are high stakes like when Vienna and Turkey are getting hun or when the mob comes into her saloon to find the group
