Johnny Guitar: Closing scene
REPRESENTAION
Vienna
Very strong woman
#
When in DK lair, first time we see her doing wifely duties because she's cooking for Johnny Guitar
Johnny and Vienna are shown as calm as collected, they are holding one another and listening
Although Bart and Corey are represented oppositely because they are fighting and Bart's aggressive
Emma
She is the first to enter the lair
This shows her urgency
Stand off between her and Vienna
This isn't typical for a western, normally the men stand off
EDITING
Cross cutting
between Vienna + Johnny to Bart + Corey
When he's telling Corey about his plan to give over JG +V
Cut on action
Used when Bart stabs Corey
When Vienna turns around and looks at Johnny
Shows her surprise with the fact that he has a gun, especially since he said he no longer used one
Cutting is fast
Pacing is fast
Intensifies the scene, especially since it's a fight scene
The duration of the shots before the fight is long because it's building up the tension
Johnny can't trust the dancing kid and his gang, while the threat of the mob is still at large, linking to the fact that no one at the time who worked in the industry could trust one another due to McCarthyism coming after them
#
Fade
Right at the end to transition into the credits
Implies their freedom
CONTEXT
Sterling Hayden
Gave up some of his friends to the HUAC (House of Un-American Activities Committee)
#
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Vienna is shown in the foreground, implies she still has control over Johnny
Bart and Corey are shown in a medium shot, while Vienna and Johnny are shown in a long shot, implies there urgency with the situation
POV Shot
Johnny guitar watching Bart creep up behind Dancing Kid to shoot him
Links again to people giving up their friends
#
Long shot
Of the house, vienna and emma on opposite sides, while the men are hidden behind logs, symmetrical
Shows that women are just as strong as the men in the film
Of the mob together showing that they have power in numbers
Camera Pans to follow DK walking to Johnny guitar, it then interrupted by a medium shot of Vienna looking towards them while she's cooking, it then cuts back to the DK and he carries on walking to V and the camera continues to pan
Shows that he's trying to analyse the situation and make out what he can from both of them, like an interrogration
Over the shoulder shot
Over Vienna's shoulder, emma appears
Links again to the idea of backstabbing and people always having to look over their shoulder
Also show's she has support because it puts the audience behind her, because they are backing Vienna
Two shot
Medium shot of Vienna with Johnny Guitar
Vienna throws away the gun
It shows that she does not want to carry on with the violence, she would rather be civil
High angle shot
Of Vienna and Johnny Guitar walking through the mob
Implying that they are all the same
They are all on the same level
Shows that once the leader of the pact is gone, the pack will no longer know what to do with themselves
Over the shoulder, looking down at the mob from Barts point of view, this shows the power bart believes he has
He's very confident within this scene, ,making the audience even more cautious of him
Goes from a shot of DK, JG and V to a two shot of only JOhnny and Vienna, showing that they are going to back each other up till the end
She does not have loyalty to the dancing kid
After the disagreement and the dancing kid finding out that Johnny guitar is actually Johnny Logan, it transitions back into all of them within the shot, it shows that he trusts him due to his status
The dancing kid wants protection from Johnny Guitar
Camera pans to follow DK towards JG and V, shows his mind process as he is realising that he's speaking to Johnny Logan
Low angle
When Bart stabs Corey in the back
It's on screen for a couple seconds before it cuts back to a long shot
It shows the power that's gone to Barts head and how he can turn on his friends like that
#
AESTHETICS
MIS-EN-SCENE
Trap door in Dancing Kids lair
Shows how some people back stabbed their friends who were communists to save themselves
Linking clearly to Sterling Hayden
Emma is shot by Vienna
Its the same outcome as Bart
Shows that the bad will have consequences
Now dressed in a bright yellow top with a red scarf, red linking to communism
The mob
All dressed in black representing their mindset and that they are not willing to change
Black is perceived as a colour to do with death and therefore it is fitting for them to be coming from one funeral to another because emma dies
SOUND
Song 'Johnny Guitar' plays at the end
Performed by Joan Crawford
Orchestra music is used as the fight is going on, building up the tension
PERFORMANCE
Dancing Kid
He runs towards the camera, it intensifies the scene
Audience isn't shown Bart's conversation with Emma
Makes them question him even more and opens up an enigma
