B5 revision:Pathogens
Bacteria:
Small cells that reproduce rapidly in body
Makes you fee ill by producing toxins (poison) that damage your cells and tissues
Key words:
Pathogens
Non-communicable diseases
Communicable diseases
Diseases that can spread between individuals
Organisms that cause diseases
Diseases that can't spread between individuals
Viruses:
Can reproduce rapidly inside body
Lives inside cells and replicates to produce many copies of themselves
This cell then bursts releasing all the viruses
Protists:
Single celled eukaryotes
Some are parasites
Live on or inside other organisms and can cause them damage
Transferred to organism by vector
Vector
An organism that carries and transmits and pathogen from one host to another but doesn't suffer the disease the pathogen causes
Fungi:
Some are single-celled
Some made up of hyphae (thread like structure)
Hyphae can grow and can stick to human kin and surface of pants causing diseases
Hyphae can produce spores which can spread to other plants and animals
How they spread:
Drinking or bathing in dirty water
Infected bodily fluids(blood, vomit, saliva and faeces) of someone already infected with the disease
(Oral transmission)Swallowing water or food contaminated with a pathogen
Animal vectors
Airborne (carried in air) and can be breathed in
