Biology Topic 5- Homeostasis and response
Homeostasis
Maintaining constant internal environment
Water levels
Body temperature
Thermoregulatory system
In the brain- contains receptors that are sensitive to temp of blood flowing through the brain
Also receives impulses from temp receptors in the skin
Too low
Blood flows away from skin (vasoconstriction)
Hairs stand up
No sweat
Shivering
Too high
Blood vessels flow closer to skin (Vasodilation)
Sweat glands produce sweat
Hair are flat
Blood glucose levels
Controlled by pancreas
Too high
Insulin makes liver turn glucose into glycogen
Too low
Glucagon makes liver turn glycogen into glucose
Releases Insulin when too much glucose and glucagon when too little
