Do The Right Thing: End Scene
EDITING
J cut
#
Also used for nother sister crying
Music from boombox is hear before Radio Raheem, Buggin Out and Smiley are shown
Cuts from in between, the group to sal and Mookie
It allows each of them to perform their lines, while showing the anger portrayed within them by their facial expressions
Cut on Action
Used when radio Raheem jumps over the counter to grab Sal
Cuts away to a photo of two men boxing while everyone in the Pizzeria are fighting
Powerful because it highlights the violence of their actions, especially since in the photo both of the boxers are bloody
Cross cuts to different people fighting within the fight as a whole
This shows the violence in different angles, giving the audience a better understanding of what's going on
It also cross cuts to Ella who's screaming for everyone to stop, because
Early on in the film she was dressed in blue, which signified the fact that she helped to calm people down, especially the three boys that she hangs out with
Montage
A montage is used to show all the different people breaking up different areas of the Pizzeria
CONTEXT
Howard Beach
#
Two black men walked a couple miles to find a phone because their car broke down
They went to a pizzeria, although got beaten up and chased away
One of the men ran and got hit by a car resulting in his death
The men were told they were in the 'wrong neighborhood'
Lynching
I'ts a premeditated attack on a person which a mob believes has committed some sort of crime
#
Civil Rights Movement
#
Malcolm X and Martin Luther King were very big roles within the movement but in different ways
Malcolm X believed in a violent strategy
Martin Luther King believed in peaceful protests
There opinions were developed from their upbringing
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Dutch angles used to convey the mob that comes into Sals Pizzeria
This conveys their anger and instability
Before this scene, Dutch Angles were not use for any other character apart from Radio Raheem, however in this scene it's used for all of them
Dolly is used to move backwards away from the group
They then proceed to walk forwards back into the frame
the movement of the camera away from the group highlights that the audience is not in the same mindset, although the group moving back towards them comes across as aggressive and implies that their mind is set, they are ready to be confrontational
There isn't much room around the group, resulting with it feeling claustrophobic
There's no room for discussion
The dutch angles increase as each character gets more frustrated
Fourth wall is broken by the group and sal
It makes the audience feel like they are in the middle of the argument
Makes the audience look at their actions if they have done anything similar
Hand held camera is used throughout the fight scene
Makes it seem more real and it ensures the audience is directly in the action, feeling like they are contributing to the fight instead of viewing it from afar
Long shot is used to show the mob of people coming in and circling the fight while egging it on
The long shot helps to establish how many people are there
Hand held camera used to capture a close up of Radio Raheem as he's being strangled
Close up of Radio Raheem's feet dangling
Has a morbid resemblance to lynching
Tracking shot is used to go across all the faces of the different people within the community
It makes the fight more human because they are all watching the police car drive away
MEANING & RESPONSE (AESTHETICS)
MIS-EN-SCENE
Boombox is a key piece of mis-en-scene
Baseball bat
Sal uses it to destroy Radio Raheem's Boombox
Links to the Howard Beach incident where two black men were attacked at a Pizzeria
Da Mayor is dress in blue and he tries to diffuse the situation
The police are also dressed in blue, however they take on a more hands on approach
When Radio Raheem is being strangled he lifts up his left hand
This is the hand that he has the knuckle duster hate on, implying that the police are treating him that way due to it being racially fuelled
When Radio Raheem falls to the floor, the hand that has love on it is shown and that magnifies the fact that love doesn't always win, unlike in his speech he made to Mookie
Two quotes are used at the end of the scene
Malcolm x
Martin Luther King
SOUND
Leitmotif
Fight the Power by Public Enemy
Boombox
Sal calls the music 'jungle music'
Resulting with him turning the disagreement into a racial one
He also proceeds to call the group 'niggas'
As sal destroys the boombox, the music being played by it begins to warp
The warping of the music could imply that even though the music does have a political meaning some people may take it too far and therefore the song becomes a warped to fit their more extremist ideology
The mob begins to chant howard beach
#
PERFORMANCE
Buggin out spits on the floor and this conveys the fact that he does not have any respect for the Pizzeria
He does this just as he walks in
MEANING & RESPONSE (REPRESENTATION)
