The Beneficial Effects of Feeding Dry Copper Concentrate to Smelting Furnaces and Development of the Dryers
Introduction
~The raw material in copper smelting contains about 6-14% of moisture.
~There are three methods to reduce the moisture from copper which are wet feed process in smelting furnace, dry feed process in smelting furnace and steam dryer.
~S.L Chen and H. Mansikkaviita carried out investigation on the benefit of drying copper concentrate, present different drying technologies and demonstrate the superiority of rotary steam dryer.
Steam Dryer
Direct-heated Dryer
~ Rotary-drum Dryer and Flash Dryer
~Employs hot gas from combustion to heat up and dry the material by direct contact in a separate chamber by burning fossil fuels.
~ Emission of CO2 and SO2 that can harm environment.
Indirect-heated Dryer
~Steam dryer
~Steam produced by waste-heat boilers of the plant is used as heating medium.
~Does not required fossil fuel and separate chamber.
~Smaller equipment.
~Require energy to be used throughout the plant.
~ Allow lower drying temperature.
~Reduce the risk of fire ignition.

Conclusion
~Drying a wet concentrate before smelting are more preferred. ~Rotary steam dryer is an excellent choiceof dryer for copper concentrate due to it is more energy efficient and environmental friendly.
