The main types of Biomes are:
Desert
A Desert is a biome where extreme temperatures occur and it has very low rainfall.
Tundra
The Tundra is the coldest biome with extremely low temperatures.
Rainforest
The rainforest is hot and has large annual rainfall.
Grasslands
The grasslands can be very cold and very hot, its temperature ranges from 0'C to 20'C.
Aquatic
The aquatic biome makes up 75% of the earth, this biome has an average temperature of 4'C.
Food security
Food security is where all people at all times have access to enough safe, nutritious food to sustain a healthy life
Factors of food security
Food accessibility
Food accessibility means physical and economic access to food.
Food availability
Food availability means people have enough food of appropriate quality available on a consistent basis. People who do not have food availability suffer from hunger and illnesses related to lack of food, such as malnutrition.
Knowledge to use food appropriately
Appropriate use of food means using food safely and applying knowledge about nutrition, clean water and sanitation when preparing food. What is appropriate use of food varying between different places and cultures. What is appropriate and usual to eat in one part of the world might be viewed as unusual somewhere else.
Challenges to food production
Water scarcity
Water scarcity is the lack of access to enough safe water. The supply of clean and safe water is important not only for people to drink, but for the safe growth of
crops for food.
Climate change
The effects of climate change include rising global temperatures and changes in the amount of rainfall. Places that are able to grow certain crops because of the reliable rainfall can find that increases or decreases in rainfall affect the livability of that crop. Climate change may also cause more frequent droughts or floods in some regions, both disastrous to crops.
Threats from non-native things
Non-native plants, animals or insects into an area can have devastating effects on the natural environment. This can develop into a situation where food security is put at risk. Some pests can destroy large amounts of food sources.
