5.c. Rebranding - Glasgow
Causes for the need of a regeneration
In 1970 there was a decline as EDCs could make products for cheaper so factories relocated
The relocation of factories left 100s of empty factories and derelict coast land
20,000 jobs were lost
per year
from the 1970s to the 1980s
Thousands of people left glasgow which caused the people left in the city to be unskilled and very dependent
The players involved in the regeneration
Scottish government
Worked along side the city council in order to oversee all the changes.
Provided some funding to aid the regeneration
Local city Council
The local city council had 3 aims;
How to improve social housing?
Finding a new direction
What to do with the redundant riverside?
Businesses
Many businesses invested in shops on the highstreet
Invested flagship stores into the area
Glasgow high street is now the second best place for shopping in the UK (after London)
Residents
The residents had a massive input into the regeneration of the Glasgow Harbour and the Gorbals
The Gorbals
Before regeneration (past)
7 people per square meter
Relocation of hundreds of people
People saw council/social housing as a luxury but then started to make/gain money and saw it as very nasty and moved out
The crime and poverty levels dramatically increased when the money earners left as it left the dependent and uneducated residents
After regeneration (now)
There is now a mixed community of housing with 20% rented and 80% privately owned
There are lots of trees in order to increase the environmental friendliness of the ares
The residents are very involved with any changes wanting to be made and also with the thriving community
The area is now thriving and sustainable
Crime and poverty levels and decreased
A private company plans on buildings 100s on new buildings
Glasgow Harbour
£1.2 billion of regeneration over 52 hectares to create 4000 apartments on the riverside
This has attracted a range of buyers which creates a mixed community
Public realms (parks and open spaces) which is 40% of the regeneration
There are transport links all over the city
50000 square meters of retail
50000 square meters of leisure
