Resource Booklet - Figure 2
Background on Deforestation
Countries see the exploitation of resources as a way of earning money
We are destroying rainforests so quickly they may be gone in 100 years
Rainforest being replaced by
Palm oil trees
Rubber plantations
Cattle grazing
Soya farming
Expanding cities
Dams
Logging
Every year an area the size of England + Wales is felled
Half of world's rainforests have been destroyed in the last 100 years
At current rates, they will vanish in the next 100 years
Adds to the problem of climate change
People become impoverished and move to cities in search of work
What to do?
Paris Climate Summit, 2015
All countries agreed to
Reduce carbon emissions
And 50 countries with rainforests promised to
Crack down on illegal forestry
Replant millions of acres of forest by 2030
These countries are poor and rely on the exploitation of forests
So, they will need help from richer countries
Germany, Norway and the UK have promised $1 billion per year to help and the World Bank plans a similar amount
Main threat is Illegal activity
50% of deforestation is due to illegal activites
Logging
Mining
Agriculture
Create few opportunities for locals and bring no benefit to the government
Also creates environmental destruction because it is unregulated and ignores environmental laws
Examples of Deforestation
Brazil
Malaysia
Bolivia
Indonesia
