- Designed to meet families and their needs (whānau-centered care)
- Focuses on increasing well being in whānau/families
- A culturally safe model
- Similar models of whānau ora include Te whare tapa wha ( a holistic model of health)
- Whānau ora identifies the strengths and abilities in whānau and thus supports these by developing opportunities
Whanau-centered approach
- Asking whānau and families their goals and therefore responding to these goals
- Provides whānau and families with support in achieving these goals
- Focuses on relationships, self-determination and capability building in order to achieve positive outcomes
- Focuses on all factors relevant to whānau i.e. social determinants and wellness
- Recognises that each whānau is unique and thus needs unique support
