The Four-Thirds Solution
If parents worked two-thirds time instead of full-time, a child could receive care from her own parents for two-thirds of the workweek.
If you can get home from an early work day to spend time with your child, then thats better than working late every night.
Many parents can come up with work-family arrangements that meet the goals of the Four-thirds Solution.
Those who can combine a serious commitment to intimate family relationships with stead, but patient efforts toward career success can usually provide what their children need for healthy development.
Our society doesn't tell parents that the most important gift they can give their children is not a good education, elaborate educational toys, or summer camps, but time- regular, substantial chunks of it- spent together doing things that are emotionally and developmentally meaningful for the child.
