Hick also states that in order for his theodicy to work, there has to be life after death. Hick felt the idea of hell, a place of eternal suffering, is not possible as no good can come from it. Therefore, hell must be a place of cleansing, further soul-making, and a place humans go before heaven as some may have different levels of soul-making or die as a result of innocent suffering. Hick, therefore, believes in universal salvation, which, for some, will take place after further opportunities to develop into the likeness of God.
