“I would also tell any teacher that implementing the UDL principles is relatively simple. If you just think, how am I going to present this lesson in a variety of modalities and how am I going to keep my students engaged in a variety of modalities, and how am I going to assess in a variety of modalities, it's really not that difficult.”
UDL in the classroom can be summed up by "what is essential for some, is almost always good for all"
This integrates with my current schema of teaching - it is essential to provide multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression for students. Not all students learn the same way - and we must shift our teaching practice to accommodate diverse learners.
We must start to think about our students at the center of curriculum - instead of the curriculum at the center. Students all learn in different ways, have different interests, and different strengths/weaknesses. We must start to assess our students by taking these things into consideration. This fits into my current schema - and I will design lessons with the UDL framework in mind in my future classroom. It is SO important that students have an element of choice in their education.
There is so much learner variability due to environmental contexts. This fits into my current schema because I have seen students who need additional supports because of their home life. How are you supposed to concentrate on a math lesson when you are worried about when your next meal is?
