The Entitled
-
Tier 1 Interventaions
-
-
-
Make clear to all students the protocol for missing class or an assignment and what counts as an acceptable excuse (For example: Students must give 2 days warning for missing class. If a student will be absent for as assignment due date or test, they can either complete it the day before or, depending on length of absence, complete it the day after)
Make it clear what the allowances are for missing class and/or assignments and what the limits are (For example, students are allowed to miss x number of classes each school year, after which a specific penalty, such as detention, will be incurred)
Tier 2 Interventions
Create a behavioural contract for the student, outlining appropriate and expected behaviours
If student exceeds the allowance for missing class and/or assignment dates, enforce the penalty consistently and make it clear to the student that if missing class/assignments continues, what the next level of penalty is
-
Create and use specific organizational tools for the student to use (For example, a class or school planner, using alerts on a digital calendar, etc.)
Tier 3 Interventions
Bring in parents to talk with student, teacher, and principal/councillor to talk about behaviours and create an action plan that the parent will also monitor at home
Enforce the most severe level of penalty for missing class/assignments (For example, giving a failing grade for missed assignments, or severely docking points for class participation)
