Blueback
Chapter 1
Groper
It is a big blue fish. He is described as old, smart and clever. He likes to interact with humans. Abel names him Blueback.

Characters
Abel is a 10 year old boy who lives with his Mum. They go snorkelling/ diving for Abalone in the sea near where they live.
Chapter 3
School
Abel wasn't really interested in school and got in trouble for daydreaming again. He wants to study fish when he grows up.
Relationships
Abel and Blueback become friends who are able to play with each other. Abel's Mum has a memorial peppermint tree where she goes to remember his dad. Many of the things his dad knew can be seen in his mum's actions.
Chapter 2
Home
They are self-sufficient growing their own vegetables, fruit and collecting their own meats. Abel Jackson just lives with his mum. His dad is presumed dead with no body buried in the cemetery.
At sea
They go to find Blueback but only find a crayfish. Blueback comes out of a crevice and steals the fish. He goes to eat it somewhere.
Chapter 5
Boarding School
Abel moved to a town to go to school. He stayed in a hostel. He didn't like going because the bay was his place and where he belonged. He didn't like the crowd of people around him.
Dreaming
Abel dreamt that Blueback took him to a deep crevice where he found the bodies of little girls, Mad Macka, his father and some sailors. Blueback dragged him free in the dream and he woke up crying. This is the second time the author has mentioned Death- what is he foreshadowing? Who is going to die?
Chapter 7
Ties to the ocean
Abel's life will be tied to the ocean in some way. Abel's mum never wants to leave. She wants to grow old and die there.
Rescuing Blueback
- They watch Costello work up the coast. 2. Abel can't stand it and decides to go out to Costello's boat. Mum goes too. 3. They climb onto Costello's boat to see the slaughter. 4. Abel throws out abalone. His mum goes down into the water. 5. Blueback comes out to the food and starts playing. 6. Abel goes into the water with him but runs out of air. 7. Mum goes between Blueback and the divers and punched him in the face. 8. Blueback leaves and Mum comes back to the surface out of breath.
Chapter 4
Mad Macka
He was an abalone diver who came to the bay every year on the way to the coast. He knew about Blueback and gave Abel reassurance about not getting him. He died by a heart-attack. Author has put this death in - is he telling us something important is going to happen for Abel?
Chapter 6
Summer Holidays
Abel gets Mad Macka's boat and takes it out onto the ocean. They see a pod of whales. There is also a new abalone diver working their way along the coast and Abel worries about Blueback.
Chapter 8
Abel watches a tiger shark die because it was caught up on a line set by Costello. Tim Winton is giving us a message about what we are doing to animals in our oceans.
Chapter 9
Abel is back at high-school. Businessmen come and try to buy their land but Dora outlasts them. Tim Winton shows us how communities can be corrupted by environmental situations such as property developers wanting land.
Chapter 10
There is something wrong with the ocean as pilchards are dying. Abel wants to figure out what is wrong.
Chapter 11
Abel went to university to study the ocean. He didn't like being in the city. He took his girlfriend, Stella, home to meet his Mum and they went out to see Blueback.
Chapter 12
Abel spent his time diving and working a long way from Longboat Bay. Tim Winton showed us what kinds of events hurt the ocean such as tourism, man-made disasters and pollution.
Chapter 13
A devastating storm uncovered the whaling and sealing past of the Jackson's. Dora writes letters that gets Longboat Bay protected as a sanctuary. Abel feels guilt that with all his learning, it was not him that got this to happen. Dora was able to make it happen just by being herself.
Chapter 14
Dora fell down the steps and broke her hips. It took many weeks to repair. Whilst she was gone, Abel fixed up the house and sheds. She returned home and the politicians came to do the ceremony. As time moved on, a baby was born to Stella and Abel. They named her Dora.

Chapter 16
The final chapter leaves Abel with questions still unanswered. He thinks that it is only in death that he will find out all the answers to his questions. They introduce Little Dora to Blueback on her third birthday.
