Positive Behavior Intervention Supports(PBIS)
High School Student
Anxiety/Hyperactivity
Student struggles with anxiety in 9th grade class.
Behaviors of student with anxiety
Tier 1 Anxiety Intervention
Break down assignment- thoroughly explain assignment
Practice deep breathing- if student appears to be anxious I would recommend that the student slowly takes 3 deep breaths.
Help student start assignment- give examples of the first and second problems or questions
Teach student social skills- upon arrival to class appropriate greeting will be modeled between teacher and students- student- student.
Know proximity limit to students- being aware of personal space of student.
Tier 2 Anxiety Intervention
Structured breaks- allow student for a timed brain break. (computer time, or rest)
Visual schedules- provide written schedule of assignment due dates and test schedules
Practice self monitoring- teach student modulation strategies and to be aware of when their mood is depressed, manic, or just right.
Non verbal cues & signals- establish special cues and signals for when something is needed. (if student is feeling anxious they will give me a number 1-5 on the level that they are feeling. )
Tier 3 Anxiety Intervention
Collaboration with students physician and or mental health provider- If student is not complying in the classroom physician will be contacted.
Worries a lot
Low self confidence/ self esteem
Hard time concentrating
Irritable
Apprehensive to start on assignments

Tier 1 Hyperactivity Intervention
More structured routine-
Have the student stand while working on assignments- provide an adjustable desk that can be used sitting or standing. Also having a ball chair.
Provide the student with a stress ball or some kind of fidget
Teach student social skills- teach student proper interaction with others -teachers and students.
Tier 2 Hyperactivity Intervention
Provide student with peer tutoring- Provide the student with one on one help with work. Allow student to read out loud during class to help them to focus.
Sensory tools- provide specific equipment for student to help them relax or concentrate. Such as a ball chair, stress ball, music, vibrating cushions.
Social stories- prepare the student to enter a situation that may make them feel uncomfortable. Or remind them of what they should be doing if their behavior gets out of hand.
Break down assignments- Modify tests by giving less choices on multiple choice for instance 3 choices instead of 4. Shortened assignments and homework.
Tier 3 Hyperactivity Intervention
Behavior meetings- This is where the Behavior Intervention Plan is established.
Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)- Decide goals and objectives that would like to be seen. Determine a consequence for the inappropriate behaviors, and discuss reward for appropriate behaviors.
