Key terms
DIET - the type of food we ear or drink
BALANCED DIET - a diet which provides all the necessary nutrients in the correct amount to meet the body's needs.
UNDERNUTRITION - eating too little food to meet the body's needs
OVERNUTRITION - a condition where the body gets too much of a particular nutrient or nutrients
METABOLISM - the chemical processes the occur within the body in order to maintain life
DIETARY REFERENCE VALUES (DVRs) - an estimate of the nutritional requirements of a healthy population
MALNUTRITION - imperfect nutrition
ESTIMATE AVERAGE REQUIREMENT (EAR) - a useful indication of how much energy the average person needs
REFERENCE NUTRIENT INTAKE (RNIs) - an estimate of the amount of proteins, vitamins and minerals that should meet the needs of most of the group to which they apply.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL (PAL) - the number of kilojoules the body uses to fuel physical activity
BASIC METABOLIC RATE (BMR) - the number of kilojoules the body uses to stay alive each day
DIETARY GUIDELINES - advice of diet
INSULIN - a hormone which controls blood sugar levels
NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - estimates of energy and nutrients needed by individuals or groups of people
DECALCIFICATION - gradual removal of calcium from bones and teeth
