Venn Diagrams and Set Operations
Venn Diagrams
Venn diagrams
are used to represent elements of sets and the relationship between sets.
Sets are represented by circles inside a big rectangle representing the
universe
or the
domain
of discourse.
Set operations
Union
Given two sets A and B, their union is a set whose members are the members of A and B together.
Disjunction:
is closely related to set intersection.
Intersection
Given two sets A and B, their intersection is a set whose members are the members that A and B have in common.
Conjunction:
is closely related to set intersection.
Two sets are called
disjoint
if they have no members in common.
Set difference
Given two sets A and B, the difference between A and B is a set whose members are
members of A but not of B.
Complement
The
complement
of a set A is defined as a set whose elements are not in A
