Archetype & Stereotype
An ARCHETYPE is the original iteration of such a stereotype. The first one of it's kind. Think Frankenstein's monster, block headed, green skinned, bolts in the neck etc. First put on screen by Hammer Films in the 1940's, this production design of the monster became the Archetype for the later stereotypes of Frankenstein.
A STEREOTYPE is a convention, a mixture of commonly understood production elements that have been used to communicate a particular idea. The dumb Jock, the nerd, the spaceman, the policeman, the criminal, the gangster.
