- - - - Teach relationship skills - focus on whole class lessons, and teach basic relationship skills for high school students. Emphasis should be on helping students be happier and have healthy peer relationships.
      - Peer tutoring - find an outgoing peer who is willing to assist with schoolwork and help with social issues. An older student will work just as well (or even better).
      - Reward System - set up a reward system for when the student participates in class. Have it pre-arranged with the student about what kinds of rewards they want and what type of actions will gain them a desired reward.

      - Teach Social Skills - do as whole class activity and see if other teachers will help out. Frame as necessary life skill to get all student on-board.
      - Mentoring - have one or more teachers who will spend time to encourage, support and listen to student.
    - - Peer Partner - find a classmate (friendly, outgoing) who will encourage student to participate and who is willing to help with classwork.
      - Have Teacher talk one-on-one with student about expectations for participation and what could be done to help student engage. Have more than one teacher try this strategy. Focus on wanting the student to do well in class and enjoy their learning.
      - Non-verbal cues to refocus and redirect student but also to indicate that teacher wishes student to engage.
  - - - Teach relationship skills to help connect with peers. Do this as an whole-class project or small groups to avoid signaling out any students.

      - Peer tutoring with outgoing and kind student. One step up from before, an older student can also work. Focus on schoolwork and social interaction.

      - Teacher or other adult mentors students - for when peer mentoring is not working. Pick a sympathetic teacher who will encourage and support student.

    - - Pair with partner, pick a more confident student that will be kind, helpful and sympathetic.
      - The teacher will engage, encourage and praise student for interacting in the class or doing good work.
      - Assign a classroom job to boost confidence, as this will give student something "special" to do.
