The Red Bandanna
Symbols
In the book it tells how he got the bandanna in the first place. The book says he got it from his dad one Sunday morning before church when they were getting ready. His dad had a blue bandanna and he asked his father if he could have so he gave him his red bandanna. In the book the red bandanna talked more about how it meant bravery and courage.
In the documentary the red bandanna symbolizes Welles's courage and sacrifice. It also shows how much he looked up to his father, and he wanted to be just like his father. So he carried and on him everywhere he went. The main reason it talked about sacrifice because his family talked about how he could've survived.
Colors and Scenery
The documentary used a lot of clips, dark filters, and a sad soundtrack to make the audience feel sad about the tragedy and sympathy for the families.
The book showed that Welles was a normal person and brought a sense of realism to the story, and how heroic someone can be.
Perspective
The documentary showed the perspectives of his family and friends, and had their exact quotes of what they said about him. The mother and father told the story most of the time.
In the book it was mostly just a narrator telling the story of Welles. The book was definitely was more descriptive and had more information about his backstory.
Overall Message
We believe that the overall message to remember the ones who gave their life to others on the morning of 9/11. The reason why we think that is because the documentary talked about how he was hero to the people he saved that day.
The book's message was similar to the documentary in our opinion. We think the book showed more of how a normal person who was selfless could become a hero. Especially if it's someone who has always been the guy to help someone even though he may never got something in return.
Actors and Actresses
The family in the book and documentary were the same people and shared their stories about Welles the same way in both. We would not choose anyone else to take their roles.
Similarities
The similarities between the book and movie were that they had the same people talking about his story. For instance they didn't have any actors. Another similarity is that the story is the exact same and how they believed the red bandanna meant courage and bravery. Also how they about him being a hero, and the red bandanna foundation.
Differences
The differences between the book and movie is that the book was told by a narrator rather then his family. The book also started off with his families history and his childhood. The documentary showed live clips of the scene and had the his family tell the story. The movie also talked more about the red bandanna foundation.
Which One Was Better
In our opinion we thought the documentary was better because we liked how it actually showed live clips and visual aspect. It made you feel more sympathy for the victims and families. It just made feel bad in general. It touched your heart more seeing the families devastated from the attack.
