Sport Science - Planes and Axis
Key Terms
Transverse plane and longitudinal axis: Plane and axis for rotating movement - rotation.
Sagiital Plane: Rowing, running, forward and backward movements - flexion and extension.
Frontal plane and sagital axis: Plane and axis for side to side movements - Abduction and Adduction.
Frontal plane: Side to side, front and back, star jumps, abduction, adduction.
Sagital Plane and Transverse axis: Plane and axis for forwards and backward movement - Extension and Flexion.
Transverse: Through the hips toes and bottom of the body, Rotation and flexion, Superior - top section, Inferior - lower section.
Axis
An axis is a straight line down which an object rotates.
Transverse axis
Like a table football player
Allows rotation such as somersault.
Only move forward and backward.
Sagittal axis
Pases through the body horizontally through the body from back to front.
Allows rotation such as a cartwheel.
Only move side to side
Longitudinal Axis
Only moves rotationally.
Used when performing turning/twisting movements.
Pases vertically from the top of the body to the feet.
