Inappropriate Responses
Irrelevant Response
"When your response ignores the speaker's statement or message." This means saying something that has nothing to do with the line you are meant to be responding to and often says that you are not listening or that you disagree but choose not to say so outright (Louw, et al, 2014).
Tangential Response
A digression after acknowledging the speaker's statement. The topic is changed but not returned to and so the speaker is partially ignored (Louw, et al, 2014).
Incongruous Response
When the verbal and nonverbal elements of a response are out of sync (Louw, et al, 2014).
Interrupting Response
When turns are not taken and a statement is cut off by an abrupt response (Louw, et al, 2014)..
Judgemental Response
An aggressive response where the speaker's statement is attacked and criticised (Louw, et al, 2014)..
Unsupportive Response
When a response lacks the empathy required to react to a person in emotional distress (Louw, and du Plooy-Ciliers, 2014).
Appropriate Responses
Questioning Response
Response that serves to clarify the previous statement and ensure that meaning is shared (Louw, et al, 2014).
Interpretive Response
Response that "offers a plausible alternative to [the speaker's] own interpretation of a situation" (Louw, et al, 2014). This can let the speaker see their own point from a different perspective while also letting them see that they have been understood (Louw, et al, 2014).
Paraphrasing Response
"[E]xpressing the meaning of a message in different words to achieve greater clarity" (Louw, et al, 2014). This shows the speaker that they are understood and is a form of positive reinforcement.
Supportive Response
This is when you respond with empathy by showing that you understand the speaker's message and their feelings and try to comfort them (Louw, et al, 2014).
