PLANT TISSUES
-
-
-
Xylem and Phloem - they transport things like water, mineral ions and food around the plant
-
TRANSPIRATION
-
-
-
-
transpiration rate is affected by- light intensity, temperature, air flow and humidity
-
STRUCTURE OF THE LEAF
THE EPIDERMAL TISSUES- covered with a waxy cuticle, which waterproofs the plant and helps to reduce water loss by evaporation.
-
THE PALISADE LAYER- has many chloroplasts. They're near the top of the leaf as it's where they can get the most light.
XYLEM AND PHLOEM- deliver water and other nutrients to the entire leaf, and take away the glucose which was produced during photosynthesis. They also help support the structure.
PHLOEM
-
the transport goes in both directions, because of this the phloem tubes have valves
-
-
XYLEM
made of dead cells, and they have no valves
-
the movement of water FROM the roots , through the xylem and OUT of the leaves is called the TRANSPIRATION STREAM
Leaves contain epidermal, mesophyll, xylem and phloem tissues.
The opening and closing of stomata (which allow carbon dioxide to diffuse into the leaf) are controlled by guard cells in response to environmental conditions.
