What Is an Animal? (pgs 6-11)
Structure of Animals
Cells of Animals are organized into higher levels of structure with things like tissue, organs, and organ systems
Tissue is a group of cells that preform a special function, Ex: nerve tissue
Organs are groups of several different tissues that combine to do a certain function, Ex: heart
Organ systems preform the broadest functions and are a group of organs working together, Ex: skeletal system
Functions of Animals
Obtaining Food and Oxygen
Animals cant make food themselves
Get food by eating other animals, organisms, and plants
Food provides animals with energy
Animals also need oxygen
Some animals get oxygen from air, some get it from water
Adaptations are behaviors or structures that allow animals to preform the functions they need, Ex: gills allow fish to breath underwater
Keeping Conditions Stable
Animals have to keep conditions in there body stable or they die
Homeostasis is the term for stable body conditions
Ex: body temperature
Movement
Some animals move freely their entire lives, some only move at certain points in their life
Animals move to meet the basic needs of their body
Reproduction
Animals need to reproduce to keep the species going
Some animals reproduce sexually, meaning by the joining of a male sperm cell and a female egg, this is called fertilization, egg and sperm carry information about the parents and pass it to the offspring.
Some animals use asexual reproduction which is when one organism makes another identical to itself
Classification of Animals
1.5 million different species of animals
Animals are classified into 35 different phylum
Animals are classified by how they are related to other animals depending on their body structure, the way it develops, ans its DNA
A good way of classifying animals is putting them on a branching tree
There are vertabrites (backbone) and invertabrites (no backbone)
Only one phylum for vertabrites, the other are for invertabrites
Invertabrites make up 97% of all animals
