Characteristics of Worms
Biologists classify worms into 3 major phyla- flatworms, roundworms, and segmented worms
FLATWORMS belong to the phylum Platyhelminthes, ROUND WORMS belong to the phylum Nematoda, and SEGMENTED WORMS belong to the phylum Annelida
Body Structure
All worms are invertebrates, have long narrow bodies with no legs, have bilateral symmetry.
-
Nervous System
Worms and the simplest organs with a brain, which is a knot of nerve tissue located in the head
Since the worm's brain and some of its sense organs are in its heads worms can detect objects, food mates and predators quickly
Reproduction
Both sexual (2 individuals mate) and asexual reproduction ( one individual has both male and female organs) are found in worms phyla.
Flatworms
-
Include organisms such as tapeworms, planarians and flukes.
Planarians- They are scavengers but they are also predators. - They feed like a vacuum cleaner - - they glide onto its food and insert a feeding tube into it. They have eyespots that help them detect light
Tapeworms- They are a parasite flatworm. It is adapted to absorbing food from the host's digestive system. Some live in humans.

Segmented Worms
BODY STRUCTURE
Earth worms and other segmented worms have bodies made up of many linked sections called segments. Some of the segments are identical some exist in only a few segments. Ex. each has tubes that remove waste

Roundworms
Live in nearly every moist environment. They look like tiny strands of cooked spaghetti that are pointed at each end. Also they have a digestive system that is like a tube, open at both ends. Enters animal mouths and exits back end.
