Victor Frankenstein: is first known as the stranger who Walter rescued. Has a very interesting story to tell but won't at first. He later opens up and tells his story. Loves nature but commits crimes against it. Creates a monster, very hubristic
Walter: Margaret's brother, driven by science, is very curious and is searching for something in his life but is dangerously close to messing with nature too much. Is supposed to learn from Victor.
Elizabeth Lavenza: Adopted by Victor's parents. Victor's bride, represents the "ideal" woman. Marries Victor and then is killed by the monster.
Caroline: Victor's mother, dies young, sets off Victor's interest in life and death
Justine: A servant, but is close to Victor and Elizabeth. Wrongly executed for the murder of William

Margaret: Walter's sister, doesn't like that he is traveling
Henry Clerval: Victor's best friend, fascinated by science as well, in some ways is the opposite of Victor. Is killed by the monster

Plot
Begins with letters from a brother to a sister about the brothers' travels. Then switches to the life and story of Victor Frankenstein. Victor has created a monster and by doing this he committed a crime against nature. Victor comes from a wealthy family and has always received perfect affection, however, he has an unhealthy obsession with the secrets of nature is very hubristic. He then creates the monster and resents his creation. The narrative then switches to the monster's point of view. The monster only wants to be accepted by society but can not because of his looks. He then wants to take out his anger on Victor. The monster then kills his close friends and family. The novel ends with the monster and Victor both dying and neither realizes their crimes.
