Glass Castle
The movie didn't have the part where the kids were bowling and they were getting rocks thrown at them.
Jeannette still gets burned while trying to cook hot dogs in the boiler.
The movie and the books similarities is that the Dad is still a drunk and he spends his money on alcohol and beer.
The events are placed differently in the movie than in the book. Like in the book it stays mostly in the past but in the movie it jumped back and fourth .
Jeannette goes to the hospital and she says that it's a place where she could stay forever cause they provide food and that she has a place to sleep.
Similarities
Differences
The movie showed that robby didn't rape Jeanette and she left before it even happened.
Dad(Rex) takes Jeannette out of the hospital cause he doesn't believe that they take good care of her.
The family moves to Welch,West Virginia because the father got a job in Welch that could have their family make money and can make them happy by living in a home instead of in the car and driving everywhere
There wasn't Phoenix in the movie or the adobe house i noticed this because it was a big part in the book
Plot Points in Movie
The father stopped drinking for two months in the movie but in the book he stopped for a year.
Plot Points In Book
Jeannette Walls and her family. Constantly short on cash and food, the family moves around the country frequently and tries to re-settle.
The kids leave from oldest to youngest to go to New York but leave Maurine behind with their parents.
In the end Rex gives Jeanette a book full of all the stories she had written about her life since the eighth grade.
Individual-Gavin
I liked the Movie version better. Why, i picked the movie version is because it was a very descriptive movie. It also get very emotional at times like the time that Rex put the chair through the window be cause of his mother passing. I also liked it because
If i were to compare glass castle to huck finn glass castle was better because you could relate easier because it had actually happened and wasn't something that potentially could happen. What I learned about myself is that i could get more engaged to into the book because i knew it happened not to long ago.
Individual-Dawson
I liked the book version better. The reasons why is because that there was more imaginary thoughts rolling through the book. I like imagining things as I'm reading the book. I also thought there was a lot more feeling and emotion in the book than the movie. Reading the emotion in them and the thoughts that were going through Jeannette's head really told how emotional she was to her family.
It makes you realize that in nonfiction novels is that these things actually happened. Like where people are drunk and are awful to their families and how the kids are beaten or yelled at and screamed at. These awful things actually happened to people around the world. Fiction books like Huckleberry Finn compared too non-fiction Glass Castle. What we learned is that in a non-fiction book there are stronger feelings in the nonfiction book because these events actually happened to the people and their families like the good times and the bad times.
Though the family is dysfunctional, the memoir communicates itself without condemning either of the Walls parents.
Book
Movie
Colors/Scenery: They painted the house yellow for it to be bright and a happy place.
Actor/Actresses: They fit my descriptive because all of them looked like siblings in some way shape or form.
Symbols: When Jeanette first got her journal it didn't mean anything right then and there but in the last part of the movie it played a big part because of what Rex did for Jeanette was very thoughtful.
Perspective: Jeanette tells the story in third and first person.
It took place in Arizona and West Virginia and New York. The Arizona one they lived in adobe household. In the West Virginia one they lived in a small house that didn't have electricity and water. The one in New York they lived in a rich apartment.
Jeannette: a young girl that is very independent and later in the book realizes that she's needed are family.
Dad: a drunk who spends his money on alcohol but tells the kids life lessons and keeps them happy throughout their life.
Mom: Artist loves to paint and has the same opinions as the Dad.
Overall Message: despite all the tough times in life there is still happiness no matter the circumstances
Fire. Fire is present in The Glass Castle from one of the very first scenes, when Jeannette accidentally lights herself on fire while making hot dogs as a three-year-old.
Jeannette is the narrator in the book. Only Jeannette is the one that tells the story.
The moral of the story is that throughout all of your obstacles and problems that are in the way, you would always find happiness and the people you love through those problems and obstacles that make you happy.
