Hidden Figures
Movie
Symbols: A symbol from the movie would be chalk. This is because whenever Katherine was given a piece of chalk it was almost like her brain flipped on a switch. The piece of chalk represent her brain.
Perspective: In the movie there are multiple perspectives. Each woman as a different obstacle to overcome in the movie.
Actor/Actress: The three women did fit the description fairly well. Dorthy was a smart strong woman. Katherine was always right and knew what she was doing. Mary was a smart butt and loved the attention.
Color/Scenery: In the movie the colors were lighter. They used a lot of light blue. They were trying to make it a happier and have a home feeling. They also use pumped up music to make the movie entertaining.
Overall Message: The moral of the story is to stand up for what you believe when it is the right time to get to the goal. This is shown when Katherine is running to the colored bathroom everyday. Finally she stands up and gets the goal of getting John Glen to orbit the earth 7 times.
Book
Symbols: In the book a main symbol is school. This is because they talk about how the girls get an education to become famous. The symbol of school is also shown when Mary goes back to visit her high school.
Perspective: The story is told through one person. Even though the story is told through one person they get every point of view. They talk about every main character but mainly Dorthy.
Main Character: The main characters in the book were Dorthy, Katherine, and Mary. Dorthy is very smart and had many opportunities to prove that. Katherine is also one of the main characters. She was the one that gets to work with the top notch people. Mary was the engineer who worked on ships.
Overall Message: The moral of the story is to keep fighting through the pain to reach the finish. If you stand up for what you believe and in the end it will be worth the fight. They want people who are reading the book to see that women even African American Women can do any job.

Similarities
In the book and the movie they described Katherine's husband dying. Also how Katherine is living with three kids and being a single mom.
In the book and the movie Dorthy was the boss of the West Campus. At the west campus they were considered computers. Computers were people who calculated math for the other campus.
The civil rights movement is progressing throughout time in the movie and the book. This is because it's a main factor that got these women jobs and the education they needed.
In both the book and movie, they explain how smart Katherine is. In the book they talk about how she was taking high level classes as a young girl. In the movie they showed her parents talking to her principle about moving her to a higher level school.
In the book and the movie the African American women have to sit at an assigned lunch table all alone. This shows how bad racial discrimination was during this time and it was an important event to put into the movie.
Differences
In the movie gets stared at by a group of white women in the office while she was delivering papers. This happened in the movie and not the book because they wanted to show how the African American women working there were treated throughout their whole job experience at NASA.
In the movie they exaggerate the struggle Katherine went through multiple times a day to use the restroom. They showed this by having her run in heels to the bathroom half a mile away. When someone asked her about it she told Al Harrison and he decided to make a change. He took down the colored bathroom sign and made sure everthing including coffee and lunch tables were for everyone not just whites.
In the movie when John Glenn meets the computers and engineers he doesn't ask Katherine to be in charge right away like he does in the book. This is because the movie didn't need to include that because they wanted us to see John Glenn appreciated her presence anyway.
In the book the main character was mainly Dorthy. As in the movie the main character was Katherine. This is because Katherine had the "fun" job. She got to work under Mr. Harrison. Dorthy was someone who just ran the West Campus.
The movie has dialogue between the character and the book has facts. This is because if the movie was just all facts it would be boring. No one would want to sit and listen to facts. They need to have other people speak other than just a narrarator to keep it entertaining.
Plot Points
In the book they talked about the girls graduation. In the movie they didn't include the girls life before they worked at NASA. The first few chapters were about the girls life and how they achieved to be working at NASA.
In the book they talked about the cold war. They didn't include the war in the movie. Since they didn't include the war in the movie, it took away from how the women got their jobs at NASA. In the book they stated that the war was going on and all the job opportunities that came from it.
In the movie they show Dorthy and her kids getting kicked out of a library. This adds to the movie because it is showing how segregation was. Segregation was a big part in both the movie and book but in the movie they made it more dramatic. They want the people watching the movie to be interested. They also want the watchers to see how terrible the issue was.
In the movie they start off with all three women on the side of the road checking their cars engine. Eventually a cop pulls up and helps them. The only way the cop helps is because they work for NASA. This is included in the movie because they were showing how strong the segregation was back during this time.
