Character relationships
Willie
Willie is the main character in the story and he falls in love with Rosie. When he goes to the Perth priest school he runs away and goes back home to Rosie and his family. Along the way he attempts hook up with Roxanne. He also seems very sensitive in certain situations and cares about the people close to him.

Rosie
Rosie is an Aboriginal girl that Willie has a crush on and thinks about. Rosie can also sing very well and agrees to sing with Lester in a club. She seems very nice and sticks up for Willy when he gets hurt. Rosie is very pretty and the typical girl that any boy would like. However, since she is an Aboriginal, she does not have as many opportunities as 'white' people.
Uncle Tadpole
Uncle Tadpole seems laid back and goes with the flow of life. He is also a drunk and addicted to beer. However, he keeps his word to take Willie back to Broome, where Willie can meet his family again. Uncle Tadpole is also Willy's dad. He is also very proud to be an Aboriginal and attempts to teach Willy the Aboriginal customs and more about their culture's religions and beliefs.
Roxanne
Roxanne is an Aboriginal drunk woman who tries to hit on Willie. She then hides in the back of the hippy van and travels to Broome with the hippies, Tadpole and Willie.

Slippery
Slippery is Benedictus's son. He is on his way to visit him when he 'runs over' Uncle Tadpole and he then travels to Broome with them and his wife Annie who likes the Indigenous people. Slippery then makes Annie choose between him and the Indigenous people.

Lester
Lester is like a playboy and doesn't really love Rosie for who she is. He sings at a club and wanted Rosie to join him, leaving Willy behind. Lester also becomes jealous when Willie returns to town and gains Rosie's heart back. He then hooks up with Roxanne and shows his true colours.

Roadhouse Betty
Roadhouse Betty is desperate for love and tries to get love in any way she can. She uses weird 'hot' jokes to get any man she can.

Annie
Annie is a hippie travelling around with her boyfriend (Slippery) around Australia. She also seems very welcoming to the idea of taking two Aboriginals back to their home. Annie is also very open to the Aboriginal's ideas and loves to talk. At the end of the movie, she tries to feel included by telling everyone that she is also Aboriginal.

Father Benedictus

Father Benedictus is the head priest and used to be the boyfriend to Willy's mother. Together they had Slippery. Father Benedictus isn't a huge fan of Indigenous people and makes racist remarks to Willy and attempts to catch him so that Willy will be punished. However, after meeting the rest of Willy's village, he changes his mind about Aboriginal people.
