Foreign policy under Henry VIII
1510-1514
1512- Henry wanted to renew the Treaty of Estaples in 1512 but instead of that happening, in 1512 the Holy League was created with Spain, Holy Roman Empire, Papacy and England
1513- England invade France and thought there would be help from Spain but Spain introduced a different attack whilst England invaded France. Spain gained Navare. England gained nothing
1513- England invades again but this Tournai was captured
1514- Scotland invades England with the support of France but James VI left Scotland in the hands of a minor at the Battle of Flooden and most of the Scottish nobility were killed
Outcomes
Tournai eventually sold back for even less than what England paid for
Henry failed to exploit Scotland which was left in the hands of a minor
1515-1527
Henry refused to the believe the fact that England was minor so Wolsey had to assume policies
Francis I ascended throne and Henry felt threatened so sought alliance with Spain but Spain Ferdinand died and Charles V took over and sought alliance with Francis and this left England isolated
1517- Treaty of Cambrai left England isolated, as HRE, Papacy, France, Spain allied
1518- Treaty of London by Wolsey- non agression pact
1520- Field of Cloth of Gold £15,000 France and England good relations
1521- Treaty of Burgees signed with Charles
relations with Charles and Francis broke down and this was good for Henry as he sided with Charles and wanted territory and also wanted a relation with the papacy
Charles invaded France but nothing was achieved : :
1525- Battle of pavia
England suggests joint invasion but declined by Charles
1527-1540
England tries to build alliance with France but Francis Son marriage proposal to Pope's niece
1527- Pope captured by Spain and Charles nephew of Cahtherine of Aragon
relations between Spain and France break down and this is good for England as they are not isolated
Pope says Catholics in the country no longer have to listen to Henry and Henry worried passed the 1539- 36 Articles Act
Marries Anne of Cleves and ensures the support of the league of Smalkden as they do not like Catholic Church
