MOTHERS- today more than half of all mothers with children under 18 are employed outside the home
FATHERS- today many are active participants of in the socialization of their children
which member performs what job, as well as distributions of authority.
CHILDREN- used to be economic asset, now are an economic liability
Reproduction
technological changes (birth control, reproductive assistance), as well as economics have affected family size
young people are choosing to postpone having children to reach financial stability... postponing to the late 30s affects fertility.

public school emerged in middle of the 19th century
today, many schools teach sex educatio, substance abuse prevention, and anger management
Authority Pattern
in the 20th century mothers gained status as family providers and influencers
TODAY- authority patterns follow egalitarian pattern
ancient times the authority patters were patriarchal
Economic Support
families were self-sufficient with their farms, and land
19th century- families sold crops for profit and industries grew
until 18th century families were extended
TODAY- most families require economic contributions of both parents in order to afford basic needs
Nurturance/Emotional Support
multigenerational bonds and link to extended kin need to be reassessed
we now have access to modern medicine and technology
has remained fairly stable
