Culture is a groups set of beliefs, practices, and values.
Earlham has a very distinct culture. Extracurricular activities play a huge role in our overall culture. For example, a typical fall Friday night for an Earlham person is going to the football game. Not only are sports a big part of our culture, but also music. There are lots of concerts and a musical every year. When it is the weekend of the musical, pretty much everyone goes. Every activity is very encouraged here and it does not go unnoticed. A lot of kids and also adults are involved in a school activity and this is normal for Earlham.
The difference in the origins of folk and popular culture is that folk culture started in a ton of areas and popular culture started in one specific spot.
The difference in the diffusion of folk and popular culture is that folk culture is much smaller and spreads out evenly mainly through migration. While, popular culture spreads out really fast and unevenly.
Folk culture distribution has physical and cultural factors that play into it. For example, like being isolated from other countries because of distance. Popular culture is widely spread but physical factors don't play as much of a role.

Culture is organized into two major types, universalizing religions and ethnic religions. Universalizing religions are religions that are more global and aren't in a specific area or group of people. While ethnic religions are more for just one group of people in one area. But, universalizing religions reach more people because they are trying to spread the word about their religion. These religions believe everyone should be that religion not just a certain group of people.
An example of a Universalizing religion is Christianity. Christianity is a religion that believes in one God and they also believe that those who believe in him will go to the eternal heaven. An example of an ethnic religion is Assyrian. This is a perfect example because the religion is just in that specific area.
There are a few similarities between all religions. But a few are they more than likely believe in one god, believe in some sort of after life, most do some sort of prayer , and give money or help the poor.
Territorial conflicts arise between religious groups because religions that are close don't believe in all of the same things, which can cause issues between the two. Also, conflicts arise from extremists thinking that only their religion is the right one and going to drastic measures to prove that. Another conflict that can arise is between the denominations in a religion. Because they believe the same main concept but they can disagree on other parts of their own religions.
Women in most religions don't play as big of a role as men. They are seen as less than men and are normally not allowed to be religious leaders. For example, in most religions men can only be the rabbi or the priest. And in some religions women are even asked to cover their face and hair.

Culture is the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group. Culture comes from how a person is raised and what environment they are brought up in. For example, like what people eat growing up and what music they listen to. We see evidence of this in family culture. Like a person having the same culture as their family because when they grow up with people they adopt the same life styles.
Two examples of elements are culture could be religion and cuisine. These two elements play a huge part in peoples lives. Religion could be a big part of someones culture or not at all. For example, a part of someones culture could be being a Christian, so someone with that culture probably went to church on Sundays. While, cuisine affect just about everyones culture because it is what we eat. So, if your from Mexico you probably eat a lot of Mexican based dishes. Culture plays a big part in society because it makes society what it is. It affects people because it makes a persons lifestyle.
Culture affects a persons identity because each area has it's own culture and way of life. So, like if a person lives in the Midwest they grew up in the Midwestern culture. But, all the different regions and their cultures make up the United States Culture. So that means every region from the west coast to the east coast.

Language is apart of based on where you live and the languages that are spoken in that area. A language usually intertwines with a specific group of people and their language is apart of their culture. So language and culture go hand and hand because it is apart of your culture. Even people with the same language have different cultures which affects the way they say things. Like for example, people in Wisconsin say soda when a lot of Midwesterns say pop.
Languages are organized into families, branches, and groups. Families are a collection of languages related by ancestries. Branches are languages within a family related by ancestry. Groups are languages within a branch that share a origin and have similar vocabulary and grammar.
Languages represent the broader notion or national and cultural identity because nations speak different languages. And usually a language is based off a region in the world and that language represent their national identity. Cultural identity is based off of a specific region and your home or where you come from. So in a more broad perspective national identity is a ton of languages and cultures that are all intertwined.
Language is vital to national and cultural identity because we need language to communicate with each other. So, if we didn't have there would be no way to talk to each other and share ideas and just do normal things. Language also makes each culture different and unique and without different languages we would all just be the same and that is boring.
Language unifies people by letting them connect and talk to each other. It helps people connect on a deeper level because they speak the same language. So, when people speak the same language or very similar ones it makes it easier for people to discuss and talk to each other. But, on the other hand if people don't speak the same language it can kind of separate them. When people can't understand what they are saying it makes everyone frustrated which can divide them. Even slang of a specific language can divide people because they don't agree on how to say something.
