War Photographer - Poem
1st Stanza
1st Line - 'In his dark room he is finally alone' The 1st line shows that he is in a place of sanctuary by using the word 'finally' The Lack of light inhibits the social interaction.
2nd Line 'With spools of suffering set out in ordered rows' He uses sibilance and this line shows that he is trying to create order form the chaos.
3rd Line 'The only light is red and softly glows' The use of the colour red represents the colour of blood. And also the soft colours could represent battle flares and explosions.
4th Line 'As though this were a church and he' This line makes it seem like a religious ritual performing it in a place of peace and safety.
5th Line 'A priest preparing to intone mass' Again another reference to God. God is meant to bring piece not war, they contradict each other. Represents the fragility of life. Wars are often due to religion
6th Line 'Belfast. Beirut. Phnomh Pen. All flesh is grass' This line is a reference to all the recent wars. The effect of the full stops is that they fix and make the images stand out, a long list highlights the many wars.
2nd Stanza
1st line 'He has a job to do, solutions, slop in trays' Seizura again. It implies carelessness.
2nd Line 'beneath his hands, which did not tremble then' This lines shows the effects of being in a place of sanctuary and the effect that adrenaline has on the body at that one time.
3rd Line 'Though seem to now. Rural England. Home again' This line contradicts the idea of rural English life. It makes it seem like it is a chore to be home again and no one takes for granted what they do.
4th Line 'to ordinary pain to which simple weather can dispel' This shows that the problems people have here and no where near as bad as that where she takes photos. It contrasts the two effects and makes the reader reflect on how bad their problems really are.
5th Line ' to fields which don't explode beneath their feet' Shows the idea of the two sets of children one in England and one in these countries.
6th Line 'Of running children in a nightmare heat' A reference to one of the most famous war photos, the Vietnamese children running with no clothes on. People are more generous and feel worst if children are involved.
3rd Stanza.
1st Line 'Something is happening. A strangers features' Uses a short sentence to start the building of tension in the first line of the stanza.
2nd Line 'Faintly start to twist before his eyes' The picture is starting to form in the solution and the photos are starting to form.
3rd Line 'a half formed ghost. He remembers the cries' The idea of the pictures forming but also a reference to death'
4th Line 'of this man's wife, how he sought approval' they are going over the stories to make the pictures seem personal with the photographer and with the reader.
5th Line 'without words to do what someone must' The must shows a need to do their job, maybe in a hope that it will end the suffering.
6th Line 'and how the blood stained into foreign dust' The blood of someone just disappears into nothing, makes it seem insignificant, someone's death. Also a reference to the biblical story of Adam and Eve.
4th Stanza.
1st Line 'A hundred agonies in black and white' makes the suffering feel insignificant because will only be shown in 5 or 6 photos.
2nd Line 'from which the editor will pick out 5 or 6' This shows that only a few photos will show the extent of the suffering. Also the relaxed feeling about picking them out makes the tone feel not very serious and like they do it all the time.
3rd Line 'For Sunday's supplement. The reader's eyeballs prick' Makes it seem like they get the photos every week. A feeling that they will be put into the paper and never seen again.
4th Line 'with tears between the bath and pre-lunch beers' People living in luxury whilst this is going on. They can move on and forget about the photos once they have read the article.
5th Line 'From the aeroplane he stares passively at where' This maybe refers to the fact that he is starting to become sensitive to the fact that the British people don't really care.
6th Line 'He earns a living and they do not care' The British people in reality do not care about the suffering. Also they do not care about the war photographer who has to expose himself to these horrors.
The final stanza is anticlimactic. He makes a living of the British people yet they do not really care what happens in these countries.
