Digestive & Urinary System
Major Functions
Digestive- consists of organs that are involved in the breaking down of food into molecules that can pass through the wall of the digestive tract and can be taken up by cells
Urinary-remove liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine
Major Organs
Urinary
Ureters- carries urine from from kidney to urinary bladder
Bladder- stores urine
Kideny- filter waste products from blood
Urethra- tube that carries urine from bladder to outside of body
Digestive
Mouth-opening to oral cavity
Esophagus- collapsible tube runs from the pharynx to stomach
Stomach- food enters at the cardioesophageal sphincter
SI- Muscular tube extending from the pyloric sphincter to the ileocecal valve
LI- site of absorption of water & electrolytes
Anus- Eliminates feces from rectum to exterior
Digestive Enzymes
Trypsin- produced in pancreas, breaks down proteins
Pancreatic lipase- produced in pancreas, used to break apart fats
Pepsin- produced in the stomach, helps break down proteins into amino acids
Deoxyribonuclease & Ribonuclease- produce in the pancreas, they are enzymes that break down in nucleic acids like DNA & RNA
Amylase- produced in mouth, helps break down large starch molecules
Nephron
function is filtration
plasma is filtered through the capsule
Layers of GI Tract
Submucosa- areolar CT containing major blood vessel
Muscularis layer- two layers of smooth muscle to allow peristalsis and segmentation
Mucosa- contains mucous membrane
Serosa- outer covering of the Gi tract
Disorders
Digestive
Cholecystitis- inflammation of gall bladder
Gingivitis- inflammation of gums
Gastritis- inflammtion of stomach lining
Urinary
Cystitis- inflammation of bladder
kidney infection- bacterial infection
Diuresis-increase production of urine
Location of Digestive & Absorption
Absorption- transport of digested end product into blood and lymph through the wall of GI tract
Digestive- taking food through mouth
