Period 5
Major functions of the
digestive and urinary systems
Digestive: breakdown of foods within stomach and intestines for use by body's cells. Absorption – passage of digested food from digestive tract into blood.Elimination – body's expulsion of undigested food or body wastes.
Urinary: Their function is to remove liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine; keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood; and produce erythropoietin, a hormone that aids the formation of red blood cells. The kidneys remove urea from the blood through tiny filtering units called nephrons.
major organs of the digestive and urinary systems
Urinary:
Two kidneys. This pair of purplish-brown organs is located below the ribs toward the middle of the back
Two ureters. These narrow tubes carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder
Bladder
Two sphincter muscles
Nerves in the bladder
Urethra.
Digestive:
Salivary glands.
Pharynx.
Esophagus.
Stomach.
Small Intestine.
Large Intestine.
Rectum.
Accessory digestive organs: liver, gallbladder, pancreas.
digestive
enzymes (including names and functions)
Digestive enzymes are released, or secreted, by the organs of the digestive system. These enzymes include proteases that digest proteins, and nucleases that digest nucleic acids. Examples of digestive enzymes are: Amylase, produced in the mouth.
layers of the GI tract
The GI tract contains four layers: the innermost layer is the mucosa, underneath this is the submucosa, followed by the muscularis propria and finally, the outermost layer - the adventitia. The structure of these layers varies, in different regions of the digestive system, depending on their function.
Nephron anatomy and physiology
The nephron of the kidney is made up of two major parts; the renal corpuscle and the tubules. ... The tubules are split into the proximal tubule, the loop of henle, the distal tubule and the collecting ducts.
disorders of the digestive and urinary systems
Urinary disorders:
Bladder Cancer.
Bladder Diseases.
Interstitial Cystitis.
Kidney Stones.
Ostomy.
Overactive Bladder.
Urinalysis.
Urinary Incontinence.
