  - - - The children never have the ability to make their own decisions beyond choosing what kind of artwork they will make. Everything in their life is pre-determined from how long they will live, to what careers they will have throughout their "entire" lives. They are confined into a system which they cannot get out of and are scared to retaliate against it. They are forced to accept the conditions placed upon them.
        
        They don't try to change their futures.

        Both Never Let Me Go and Station Eleven share an interesting theme of art. Both use art as a form of self expression and the characters in both books find a sense of self and comfort in it. In Never Let Me Go, Tommy uses his art as a way to potentially get a deferral and the art gives him a motivation to live longer. In Station Eleven, all that remains after the disease outbreak is art, and the survivors use it as a way to connect with their former selves and with others. It brings them excitement and a reason to live. This is an interesting unifying theme between the two novels.

  - - - Dana is forced to live through the system of slavery and experience the oppression that goes along with it. Although she can suddenly leave the past, she cannot control when this happens and is trapped in the meantime. There were many times when Dana hoped that she would be brought back to the present as times got very difficult in the past, but this didn't allows happen to her. She experienced the same feeling of being trapped in a system that slaves had and had no control on when she could leave.
