- - - - so youth is beginning earlier - but also being stretched at other end = people are staying in education longer and marrying later = so 'youth' could be said to continue into 20's
- - - - in pre capitalist societies = this transition was marked by initiation or rite of passage -- marriage and childbearing = extend youth did not occur
      - capitalism created a divide between role of the family and the specialised requirement of the workplace = required training and socialisation for a young person which was not previously required
    - - important that individuals break ties with their parents (childhood) to develop independence (adulthood)
      - parsons sees youth culture as a rite of passage that individuals must go through between that transition
  - - - provide a safe outlet during the tensions of transition = allow young epople to let off steam, find their opinions and let of frustration in an acceptable way
      - this period of rebellion is accepted and tolerated as 'normal' and essential part of growing up
        
        also a way of testing boundaries, experimentation and reinforcing acceptable norms and values and thus will ultimately contribute to social order
