Graben flanks = rotated fault blocks
Middle = topped w Plioquaternary sediments

Axis = evaporites (& other basinal facies)
= Biggest evaporitic basin in Cyprus
Polis Graben Structure
Created by planar faults dipping into graben on both sides
--> created accomodation space for seds
Most faults oriented NNW - SSE
Some (generally younger) - opposite direction
Extending rapidly today
strongly controls geomorphology
extensional faults in fossil soils + pleistocene conglomerate
Why did Polis Graben Form?
Subduction Zone = rolling back to SE
--> Creates extension
Erastosthenes Seamt arrives @ trench
L. Miocene
Pins SZ South of Cyprus
BUT SW Cyprus - SZ not pinned
∴ can extend back by rollback & form Polis Grabe

Troodos Ophiolite Evo
L. Cretaceous

Cyprus forming above SZ
Ophiolites emplaced across Syria (E) to Oman
Neotethys Ocean remained as remnant basin through Tertiary (Cenozoic)
∴ Miocene-Pliocene saw continued subduction
