Arakapas Fault Belt
Arakapas fault belt
Where?
Not outcropping everywhere
Limassol Forest outcrops to South
S. fringes Troodos Massif
What?
Fossil fragment oceanic lithos - highly brecciated
Unconformably overlain by volcaniclastic seds
Magmatic intrusions through it
Dykes rotated 90° nr fault belt
E-W trending
Shallow marine, steep
Susceptible to slumping
Simon & Gass 1978
Arakapas transform & ridge intersections
3 domains w distinct palaeomagnetic properties
W: rotation 1° horizontal
Central: no rotation
Lack of rotation in centre
Suggests temps high enough for upper crust to decouple lower curst
i.e. fossil spreading ridge
brittle-ductile transition gets deeper away from spreading ridge
Palaeomagnetic signatures
Suggest clockwise block rotation about a vertical axis at the active transform domain
Occurred between dyke emplacement phases
∴ During seafloor spreading
Troodos Lava
Two assemblages found:
Depleted tholeiitic
Bonninitic
Bonninitic
A. Depleted in heavy minerals
B. Lava enriched - sed on slab sourced fluid
Two lava types interbedded
erupted simultaneously ?
Not just a fault
Covered by Lefkhara to West
Connects w serpentinised bodies to Baths of Aphrodites
Perhaps plate used Arakapas FZ
as plane of weakness to rotate ?
