ROMAN ROADS
The Romans made incredibily straight roads
Here is some of the ways they did it
They used a device with strings attached to it
They lined up the strings so they were straight and planted a pole there
They repeated this process until they had a line of perfectly straight poles
They then built the road off it
They used beacons
They used an ancient trundle wheel
This gave a click when they reached a mile
Roads were curved so water could drain off it into ditches
MESSENGERS AND TRAVELLERS
Messengers and people would take different modes of transport
But messengers on important business would have special priority
They would receive fresh horses and could cover about 50 miles a day, travelling day and night, they could treble this!
Travellers stayed at ins but they weren't very popular as they were frequented by drunks, thieves and prostitutes .
However travel by sea was more popular
The person who wanted to travel
would pay the boat keeper money to escort them.
They would only set off in the sailing season and would only leave when a sacrifice had been made to the gods for safe passage
However there were no cabins on the boat and they had to bring enough resources to make it to the next port
TRADE
Trade was a big part of Roman life
People travelled from all over the empire to trade in Britain
People mainly came for the natural metal ores
Whole hillsides were swept over with water to look for gold
mines were made as well
This then became a massive trading spot
